Why should we seek Islamic knowledge?
Our beloved Messenger Muḥammad ﷺ said, “The seeking of knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” – Sunan Ibn Majah
What knowledge must we seek?
We have been created to worship Allah, so we must learn how to do that.
How do we learn how to worship Allah?
By understanding and following the Qur’an and Sunnah.
How do we learn the sacred knowledge from the Qur’an and Sunnah?
Seek the knowledge through educated teachers of this knowledge so that we may be guided with the correct understanding of what Allah has revealed through the Qur’an and Sunnah.
We at Ilm Kids aim to provide free worksheets to supplement guided lessons and support parents, carers and teachers to facilitate young people’s learning.
To be able to receive and retain this great knowledge, we must instil etiquettes that are pleasing to Allah.
How do we seek knowledge?
| Do’s | Don’ts |
| Have the correct intention i.e. to gain the pleasure of Allah | Do not raise your voice in the teacher’s presence This includes our parents. They are our teachers too! |
| Respect: the teacher, the books of knowledge, the tools of knowledge (i.e. pen, paper, pencil etc) | |
| Sit in a respectful manner | Do not look down on others who may seem to know less than you |
| Listen attentively | |
| Make du’ā to Allah to give us beneficial knowledge. All knowledge is from Allāh! | Do not feel shy to ask questions; especially if you did not understand something |
| Practise what you learn | |
| Teach others what you have learnt |
How to prepare to read the Holy Qur’ān?
“So when you recite the Qur’ān, seek refuge with Allāh against Shayṭān, the accursed.”
– Surah Nahl Verse 98
| Perform wuḍū | Do not lean on the Qur’ān |
| Use miswak | Use ‘itr before recitation |
| Sit in a respectful manner | Recite Ta’awwudh أَعُوْذُ بِاللهِ مِنَ الشَّـيْطٰنِ الرَّجِيْمِ A`udhu billahi min ash-shaitani r-rajim |
| Place the Qur’ān respectfully on an elevated space | Recite Tasmiyah بسم-الله-الرحمن-الرحيم Bismillah hir Rahman nir rahim |
| Do not put other books on top of the Qur’ān | Recite with all the rules of Tajwīd |
Ask Allāh! Make du’a for beneficial knowledge:
The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Ask Allah for beneficial knowledge and seek refuge with Allah from knowledge that is of no benefit.” – Sunan Ibn Majah
رَبِّ زِدْنِيْ عِلْمًا
“My Lord increase me in knowledge.”
- Surah Taha verse 114
